“What are your plans after high school?” Every time that question is asked it seems to bring a different response, as different options and life paths are considered. Whether you are preparing for your post high school future or exploring options for a loved one or friend, if you have not seriously considered Bible college, you may be missing out on a critical foundation for the future.

College education is often seen as a preparation for what you want to do; law, medicine, business, etc. This is certainly a component of college education, however, more significantly, college will affect who you will be for the rest of your life; your character, values, and beliefs. The years immediately following high school are some of the most formative times in a young adult’s life.

Even a single year of Bible college can make a huge impact in a Christian's life no matter what occupation they choose. Here are some of the top reasons every Christian should consider Bible College.

1. To cultivate a Biblical worldview

We live in a society rife with ungodly philosophies such as humanism, relativism, skepticism, atheism, and evolutionism. Romans 1:21 speaks of these: “That, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” Unbiblical worldviews tend to dominate higher education institutions, even some that present themselves as “Christian.” Bible college provides the proper worldview: one built on God’s Word.

2. To receive Biblical training and teaching

2 Timothy 2:15 tells Christians to “study to shew thyself approved unto God…rightly dividing the word of truth.” Every Christian should be equipped to study, learn and apply the Bible for themselves, so they can use it effectively for God’s glory.

3. To experience godly mentorship

The Apostle Paul knew the value of mentors. He was mentored by Barnabas, and then mentored young men such as Titus and Timothy. He writes, in 1 Corinthians 1:11, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” At Bible college, staff and faculty provide mentorship and practical examples of following Christ.

4. To grow in a God-honoring atmosphere

A Bible college environment is unique. It provides support and encouragement in a world that opposes God’s truth. It refreshes the believer, and provides “sharpening” through chapel services, fellowship with like-minded Christians, and peer accountability. “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17).

5. To nurture lifelong relationships

At Bible college, I formed a bond with 6 “brothers” that continues to this day. We regularly get together to relive the “glory days,” but, more importantly, to encourage one another, pray for one another, and share how God has been working in our lives. “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow…” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). By the way… I also met my wife and best friend at Bible college during freshman orientation. We were tasked with building a cardboard boat to sail on the campus pond. Seventeen years later, it is safe to say our relationship fared much better than our waterlogged boat! Bible college is a wonderful place to meet a spouse who loves the Lord.

6. To make an eternal impact

At Appalachian Bible College, our motto is “Because Life is For Service.” It is the privilege and duty of every Christian to serve the Lord with his life. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1). Bible college should prepare you to serve God with a focus on eternity.

7. To study, learn, and live in a beautiful place

Ok, I admit, this one may not be true of every Bible college, but it certainly is of Appalachian Bible College. Located in southern West Virginia, our 150-acre campus is tucked in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. We are just 30 minutes from New River Gorge National Park, full of picturesque hiking trails and outdoor activities! We would love for you to experience our college – not just to enjoy the scenic beauty, but also to realize our passion for learning God’s Word and serving Him… Because Life is for Service.
