Music Auditions at ABC

Overview

Auditions are intended to determine your previous experience and God-given talent in order to assess your potential as a Music major at ABC. Locations and times of auditions will be announced when you arrive.

Applied Lessons

Applied Music lessons are available to all students at ABC. Music majors will have a reduced cost. Please contact the Business Office for exact pricing. All students desiring to take applied lessons must audition or have completed a previous level of Applied Music at ABC.

Voice

Students who desire to major in voice (either Performance or Pedagogy) are expected to perform at least one piece (preferably from memory), either from the classical repertoire or a sacred arrangement. An accompanist will be provided. Students should also submit a list of past repertoire.

Piano

Students who desire to major in music (either Performance or Pedagogy) are expected to perform at least one piece (preferably from memory), either from the classical repertoire or a sacred arrangement. Sight-reading will also be included in the audition. Audition pieces should be at least Late Intermediate / Early Advanced. Students should also submit a list of past repertoire.

Orchestral Instrument

As adjunct teachers are available, ABC will seek to provide applied lessons in all standard orchestral instruments.

Students who desire to major in an orchestral instrument (Performance) are expected to perform one piece that demonstrates their ability. Scales and sight-reading may also be included in the audition. Students should also submit a list of past repertoire.

Music Theory

All students who desire to major in Music (any concentration) must take the Theory Entrance Exam, which will be administered sometime during the fall semester. Non-music majors who wish to take Music Theory must also take the entrance exam.

Ensembles

Regardless of their major, all students at ABC are eligible to audition for membership in the Chapel Orchestra, Chorale, Jubilate, Gospel Heralds, and/or Magnify. (For more information on ministry teams, click here.) Students will register and receive academic credit for ensembles each semester. Specific audition dates can be found on the ABC calendar. With the exception of Gospel Heralds, auditions for ensembles are held in the first two weeks of the fall semester. Incoming freshmen for the spring semester may also audition for ensembles if need arises.

For ensemble auditions, singers should be prepared to sight read a vocal part and perform a prepared song/hymn of their choice that demonstrates their vocal range. An accompanist will be provided. Accompanists and instrumentalists should be prepared to perform a solo piece that demonstrates their ability.
